July 4th is just around the corner and there is always a need for treats when we attend parties. I’m always on the lookout for fun easy treats to make on different holidays. Pinterest has lots of fun ideas but sometimes I try new things.
So, I thought, “What’s the best thing (for kids and adults) about Independence day?”, and of course, the answer is FIREWORKS!
So I decided to make treats that look just like the beautiful bursts that we see in the sky on July 4th!
I actually came up with this idea after making my Independence Strawberries because I had leftover candy and sprinkles and didn’t want them to go to waste. They turned out really good!
They are super easy, require few ingredients, and are a sweet hit with kids and adults!
INGREDIENTS
Chow Mein Noodles
Vanilla Candy (or White Chocolate Chips)
Red Sprinkles
Blue Sprinkles
Shortening (for thinning the candy)
DIRECTIONS
Pour your bag of chow mein noodles in a big bowl. Put them aside for later.
Melt your candy or chocolate in a double boiler. If you don’t have one, go here to see how to make one. While it’s melting, add your shortening. I used 4 teaspoons but you may not need this much. Start with 1-2 teaspoons and add more if needed.
When your candy coating is melted and smooth, pour it into the bowl of chow mein noodles.
Stir or toss (or however you can do it) the noodles and candy to make sure everything is mixed and coated good. You may want to add a little coating at a time just to make sure the ratio is good. You really only need enough candy coating to cover the noodles (once candy hardens, the noodles will fuse together).
Once everything is mixed and coated good, scoop the mixture (I used an ice cream scoop) into small balls (or bursts, if you will) and place on a wax paper lined cookie sheet.
Once you have all your bursts scooped, sprinkle each of them with the sprinkles.
Place cookie sheet in the fridge to let the candy harden. When they are good and solid, move them onto a decorative tray and watch them disappear.
Easy peasy, right? You will definitely want to make these a new item in your arsenal of awesomeness.
Don’t forget, these can also be customized for other holidays and occasions. All you have to do is change the sprinkle color. For a more adult treat, you could nix the sprinkles and add nuts, mini chocolate chips or shredded coconut.
It’s all about being creative and experimenting to make it your own! Spunk it up!
