Super Simple DIY Car Air Freshener

DIY Car Air Freshener

First off, I will tell you right now that car air fresheners are my nemesis! They never last long enough or are way to strong. The cute ones have bad smells and the good smelling ones are ugly. Such a waste of money!

BUT what if you could make a really cute air freshener with an awesome smell for almost no money at all? Sounds awesome, right? How would you like to be able to re-scentify it when it stops smelling? You’d love that, wouldn’t you?

I’ve got the cheapest, easiest, cutest, funnest way to accessorize your rearview mirror and leave your car smelling fantabulous!

Materials you will need (if you don’t already have this stuff handy, shame on you!):

DIY car air freshener materials

1 piece of craft felt (regular)

1 piece of craft felt (with a sticky side)

Template of your choice (or freehand draw something)

Essential Oil of your choice (or perfume, fragrance oil, etc.)

Hole Punch

String or Twine (I used balloon ribbon)

Easy Peasy Directions:

If you don’t already know, I LOVE pink & black and I ADORE owls, so the choice was obvious for what my car smelly would look like!

I printed out a template of an owl from online and cut it out.

I traced it onto the pink felt and the paper side of the black sticky felt. You don’t have to use a template, you can just freehand draw whatever shape you want to use. Be Spunky, Do It Your Way!

Owls traced on felt

I cut both owl shapes out (plus two eyes and a nose).

I peeled the paper off the black owl and stuck it on the pink owl. The shapes did not match up perfectly so I trimmed the excess off.

I used scrap pieces of the black felt for the face because it has the sticky side. Stick on the face and punch a hole in the top.

Time for the smell! I used Wisteria essential oil (cuz it’s my FAVE) and just put like 20 drops all over the pink side of the owl (I wanted the smell to be strong). It will depend on how strong you want the smell to be or the strength of what you’re using as to how many drops you use. Just experiment with it and see how it goes.If it winds up being not strong enough, you can add more drops later. If it’s too strong, the smell will dissipate eventually and you will know better for next time!

Now, just loop some ribbon (or string, twine, etc.) through the hole and knot it up. Make sure you make the loop big enough to fit over your rearview mirror. Hang it over your mirror and admire the awesomeness!

All you have to do when it stops smelling good is add more drops of oil. :-)

How freakin’ cute is that? It is SO me and I don’t even mind that it totally clashes with the interior of my car (tan/woodgrain).

Definitely go and try this out! Don’t forget to leave me some comments or pics and let me know how it worked for you!

    • Wonderful teacher preojct. I’ve taught school for 39 years and you should smell the classroom after the kids return from lunch! Several teachers were burning candles and the fire marshall had a fit. Of course they’re banned in classrooms and this is a perfect solution. Thanks.Evelyn
